Ugh, I should have DNFed this one. It's repetitive, boring, and never really makes a point. It reads like the author wrote every chapter separately and never read them together to see just how repetitive it was. Severely disappointed.

I have always been a sucker for good WWII historical fiction, and this one did NOT disappoint. It's complicated and nuanced, and everything I could hope for. That being said, it does have a lot of low ratings, but I think because people wanted more action, and it was more about the relationships and atmosphere of the times. But either way, it was really well written and I zipped through it in two days.

It's also translated from Italian, so that's fun!

V. E. Schwab...mam...I'm confused. I feel like there were quite a few plot holes/things that weren't fully explained? I've since read that this was originally supposed to be a triology that was compressed into a duology, so perhaps that's why (although I'm not convinced that three books would have actually been better). But she's since confirmed she is actually working on a third book that takes place much further in the future. So....🤷🏻‍♀️

Either way, I won't read these again, and I'm debating whether I'll even keep them. I really like a few of the characters, but the plot feels missable and several of the characters lack life (pun not intended). I guess I just feel like superheroes lack substance. They're motives always feel so one-sided and that bores me. "Power, revenge, justice"...blah, blah, blah. Add an evil doctor and a superhero who wants to take over the city and..."Blanket Superhero Story Recipe" fulfilled.

Anyways...if you like superheroes, maybe you'll like this.

Let me start by saying I love V. E. Schwab. I love her writing style and themes, and will read everything she writes.

But...

I don't love superheros. I never have, probably never will. I just don't find them interesting. So that definitely influences my review of Vicious.

I really enjoyed her writing style as always, and I did enjoy her characters. I also love that its about two villains trying to defeat each other - one for revenge, one for redemption. It's a really interesting take. But I think part of what ruins is that they both end up reading like deranged people who lack empathy, and it just starts to feel...dull?

If you love superheros though...you'll probably love this. I just...didn't.

I'm still reading the next one though because I bought the boxed set and I already hung up the poster that came with it, so I can't return it 🙃

I knew I would read this book eventually, and I'm so glad I finally did. It's an enrapturing tale full of myth, monsters, and magic, with a truly inclusive cast. Amina is one of my all time favourite characters, as is Dalila. I love love loved this story.

It takes Lovecraft's prejudices and turns the story into one of police brutality, racism, and, as LaValle states in his afterward, how "weaponized white fear is a hell of a lot more frightening than some giant squid-headed being."

It's gritty and dark, and visually captivating.

This 847 page book had so much potential, and I truly loved the stories, but it was just way too long. I felt myself losing focus and skimming in so many spots, and eventually was reading just to finish it.

I love the characters so much. I just almost wish that they had each had their own shorter book so I could have done them justice with my reading.

CITY OF GHOSTS is a middle grade novel about a girl who can cross the veil of death, her ghost hunting parents, and her best friend, who is a ghost. It was creepy and magical and just oh so wonderful. It takes place in one of my dream vacation cities (Edinburgh), mentions Harry Potter many a time, and it reminds me of one of my favourite middle grade series, The Tunnels of Time. I absolutely loved this one and I can't wait to read the next in the series!

GALLANT is perfect for spooky season. Think Coraline mixed with A House With Good Bones and A Little Stranger. It's definitely for younger audiences, but the creep factor is adult enough that I thoroughly enjoyed it. And with a word magician like V. E. Schwab, even this book didn't escape my underlines. It's an extremely well written novel with amazing imagery.

That being said, because it is for younger audiences, I didn't give it a super high rating because I'm not likely to reread it.

V. E. Schwab is an absolute POWERHOUSE of a storyteller. This trilogy wrapped up so perfectly. She has inspired me to be a better writer and a more selective reader because if there are more books like this out there I need to find them ALL.

V.E.Schwab is un-f*cking-real. Between this series and The Poppy War trilogy, I feel like I've never read fantasy before. This sequel is absolutely exceptional and stunning and gripping...I couldn't put it down.

Sooooo this was unfortunately disappointing. I was SO excited for it, but it didn't have the same easy charm as the first one, and the messaging was a bit jarring at times, with the author's voice sneaking in over the character voices. I read half of it, and then skipped to the epilogue, and decided I didn't need to go back.

I still LOVE the first one. But this one was a miss for me. (Even though the message he's giving is REALLY important.)

Alas.

I bought this because of the artwork and Baba Yaga. And while I'm not disappointed with my purchase, a lot of it wasn't relevant to me. I thought it would be more poetry (but that's my fault for not actually looking at the text first 😅). Either way, what I did read was really good and I did really enjoy it. But I'm mostly keeping it for the same reasons that I bought it...

If you want to be enraged...read this book. I'm only half joking. The data gaps in research regarding women, or the lack there of, is insane. INSANE. The number of times that women's needs are not even considered and the often life-threatening danger it leaves women is not okay. We deserve better! We're not just the other, and we're not "too complicated" to be included.

Rating: 3/5 only because it's a bit of a slog. But it is really important, and for that reason I would still absolutely recommend it!
